If your Steam Deck dock has no picture, test one display with a simple connection before buying another dock. Write down what works, change one thing, and repeat the same test. Replacing the charger, cable and dock together might restore the picture, but it will not tell you which purchase was necessary.
This guide is for a Deck that works in handheld use but loses the external picture when docked. If the Deck will not start on its own, begin with Steam Support instead. If everything works and you are choosing new hardware, use our Steam Deck dock buying guide.
The advice is research-based, using the manufacturer documentation linked below. We have not reproduced every dock, firmware and TV combination. The sequence is a way to narrow the fault, not a promise that a particular accessory is defective.
First, distinguish the two black screens
Valve documents a dark handheld screen as normal in Gaming Mode when using an external display. A working TV picture with a dark Deck is different from both screens going dark.
For a blank external screen, Valve's first useful recovery tool is External display safe mode: disconnect the Deck from the dock, enable that option in the Display settings, then reconnect. It requests a lower resolution and refresh rate. If the picture returns, work upward from the working mode instead of immediately restoring every display setting.
A full dock reset must remove both the Deck connection and external power, along with the display cables. Unplugging the charger alone leaves the dock able to draw power from the handheld. Reconnect after the reset and check again. These steps apply to the LCD and OLED models unless Valve states otherwise. Source: Valve docking support.
Record the result: “safe mode restores picture” is more useful than “dock sometimes works.” It gives you a repeatable starting point for the next test.
Build the smallest useful test setup
Select the TV input that matches the connected HDMI port, then reseat both ends of the video cable. Use one dock, one display and one video cable. Temporarily bypass an HDMI switch, receiver or other intermediate device. Disconnect optional accessories for this test; save work and safely eject attached storage first.

Keep a small test log rather than cycling through cables at random:

Our interpretation rule is simple: a successful substitution is a lead, not a verdict. Repeat it before spending money. If both the cable and resolution changed, you have two explanations to separate.

Check the output mode against the dock, not the TV box
The display's headline refresh rate is not the dock's output specification. Valve lists its official dock with HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, and output up to 4K at 60Hz or 1440p at 120Hz. Those are dock output capabilities, not promised game frame rates. Source: Valve dock specifications.
Do not apply that specification to another manufacturer's dock just because its case looks similar. Find the exact model number on the hardware or receipt, then compare its stated output with the mode you selected.

Make two columns in your notes: mode that works and mode you want. If they differ, decide whether the missing mode matters for your actual games before paying for a replacement. A higher number in a listing is not useful if you cannot identify the capability your present setup lacks.
Separate charging from the display fault
The Steam Deck LCD specification lists a 45W PD power supply and DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C. Charging and video are different functions of that connection. A charging icon alone is not proof that the complete video path is working. Source: Steam Deck specifications.
Treat a charging warning as a separate observation in your log. Note the supply used and whether the warning appears only through the dock. Avoid buying a larger charger solely because the dock advertises a large input wattage; first establish what the dock and handheld actually require.
When to contact support or replace equipment
Contact the dock maker when a minimal setup fails repeatedly and your substitution notes identify a consistent pattern. Include:
- Exact dock, Deck and display models.
- SteamOS version and dock firmware version, if available.
- Which input and output mode you used.
- Whether the issue occurs from startup, after sleep, or only in one game.
- Which substitutions worked and which did not.
Do not send a shopping list of everything you have tried without the results. A short table lets support see what remains untested. If a problem began after an update, record that timing without assuming the update caused it.
Keep the dock when a setting or one existing accessory resolves the fault consistently. Consider replacement when support confirms a hardware fault, or when the exact capability you need falls outside its documented support.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a new dock if safe mode works?
Not yet. Keep the working setup as your baseline and identify which change brings the fault back. Buy only when you can name the limitation or failed component you need to replace.
Does a working cable swap prove the old cable is faulty?
It is useful evidence, but repeat the comparison with the same display mode and other equipment. Changing several variables at once makes the result harder to interpret.
What if I cannot borrow another dock or display?
Document the tests you can complete and contact support with the missing tests clearly marked. Spending money on spare equipment merely to finish a checklist may cost more than arranging a supported return or repair.
Should I factory-reset SteamOS before replacing the dock?
This guide does not call for a factory reset. Complete the reversible connection checks and speak to support before taking a step that can remove data or settings.
