NVMe SSD Not Showing in Windows? Check These First

New SSD missing from File Explorer or Disk Management? Identify the problem, check the slot or enclosure, and avoid erasing a drive that holds files.

How we evaluate

If your NVMe SSD is missing from File Explorer, open Disk Management before replacing it. If it is missing there too, check the connection, motherboard compatibility and storage controller. If the SSD already contains files, cancel any request to initialize or format it.

A new blank drive and an old drive that suddenly disappeared need different treatment. The first may simply need setting up. The second needs its data protected before you try to make Windows use it again.

This guide is for a secondary internal NVMe SSD or an SSD in a USB enclosure on a working Windows PC. It is based on Microsoft and manufacturer documentation, with an editorial troubleshooting order. It is not a data-recovery procedure or evidence of hands-on testing. If Windows itself will not start, use your PC maker's boot-recovery support instead.

Start with where the SSD is missing

Right-click Start → Disk Management. Alternatively, press Windows + R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. These are Microsoft's documented ways to open the tool in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Look through the lower pane as well as the volume list at the top. Note the disk's capacity, partition layout and status. Do not assume your new SSD is Disk 1: identify the drive before changing anything.

Take a screenshot of the status before troubleshooting. “The 2TB drive is missing from Explorer but has a partition in Disk Management” is useful evidence. “Windows cannot see it” leaves several different faults mixed together.

If the drive already holds files, stop before setup

A Windows prompt is not proof that a disk is empty. Microsoft limits its initialization instructions to a new disk with no existing data and warns that initialization erases data. Formatting is also destructive to existing files.

Cancel those prompts if the SSD came from another PC, was cloned, contains a game library you want to retain, or has an unknown history. Do not delete partitions, run a disk-clean command or try repair tools that write to the SSD as an experiment.

If the SSD becomes readable, prioritise copying important files elsewhere. For repeated disconnects or irreplaceable data, stop testing and seek a recovery assessment.

A normal data volume has no drive letter

For an ordinary accessible data volume that contains neither Windows nor installed applications, check Change Drive Letter and Paths in its right-click menu. If no letter is assigned, use Add, select an unused letter and confirm. Then check File Explorer.

Follow Microsoft's drive-letter guidance. Leave EFI System and Recovery partitions alone. If the option is unavailable, investigate the volume's status instead of forcing a letter onto it. Changing a letter already used by applications can break their paths.

For a cloned system drive or an unfamiliar set of partitions, stop here. The existence of a partition does not tell you it should be exposed as a normal data drive.

A genuinely new SSD has no volume yet

If you have verified that the disk is new and contains nothing you need, use Microsoft's new-disk setup procedure. It covers initialization and creating a usable volume. GPT is the usual choice for a modern PC and is particularly relevant to large drives.

Check the selected disk's identity and capacity at each stage. If you cannot confidently distinguish it from your existing storage, do not proceed. An unopened retail purchase is a different case from an SSD advertised as “empty” by a previous owner.

The volume is encrypted or came from another system

If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key, locate the key through the appropriate Microsoft account, work or school account, saved record, or device administrator. Microsoft's recovery-key guide explains those routes. Formatting is not an unlocking method.

Tell support which system last used the drive and whether encryption was enabled. That history matters more than the SSD's advertised read speed.

Missing from Disk Management: internal NVMe SSD

First use Action → Rescan Disks, then check Device Manager for a disk or storage-controller warning and record its device status. These checks come from Microsoft's disk troubleshooting guidance.

Next check your PC's firmware storage information, using its manual to find the right page. A boot-priority list is not a complete drive inventory: a blank secondary SSD is not the same thing as a bootable Windows installation. ASUS makes that distinction in its SSD boot-device guidance.

If firmware does not detect the internal drive

Check the manual for the exact motherboard or laptop model and exact M.2 slot. M.2 describes the physical format; slot protocol support still matters. Check whether that slot accepts PCIe/NVMe drives, its supported lengths, and any sharing restrictions. ASUS documents examples of slot-mode and shared-port limitations.

If comfortable servicing the machine, shut it down, disconnect power and follow its service manual before checking the SSD's seating. For a laptop, follow its battery-disconnection instructions. Do not move an internal drive while powered, force a heatsink into a tight space or bend the SSD to fit a retaining screw.

If firmware detects it but Windows does not

Look up storage-controller guidance for your exact PC. On supported Intel systems using VMD, the RST driver manages drives behind that controller. Intel explains the relationship in its VMD configuration guide.

Do not disable VMD, change RAID mode or uninstall the controller driver just because a forum post says it worked. Intel warns that changing this configuration after Windows installation can cause an Inaccessible Boot Device error. Use the system manufacturer's instructions and driver package for your model.

Also check whether the drive belongs to an existing Storage Spaces pool. Windows can combine physical drives into pooled storage, as Microsoft explains. If it is a pool member, troubleshoot the pool and its virtual volume. Do not delete the pool to make one SSD appear separately.

External NVMe enclosure not showing up

For an external SSD, try a direct PC connection, a known-good data cable, another supported port and, if practical, another PC. Microsoft includes these checks in its disk troubleshooting guidance.

Change one thing at a time. If it works directly but fails through a dock, investigate the dock connection. If it fails on two PCs, both the SSD and enclosure remain suspects; that result alone does not isolate either component.

Check the enclosure manual for supported drive protocols, lengths and host connections. Its power light does not establish that Windows can communicate with the SSD.

Who should buy replacement hardware—and who should wait?

Wait if the disk has a normal volume without a letter, needs verified blank-drive setup, or is hidden behind an unresolved controller configuration. A replacement SSD can leave you with exactly the same problem.

A replacement becomes more reasonable when support or a controlled compatibility check isolates the failed component. Keep data recovery separate from a warranty return: decide whether you need files from the old drive before sending it away.

Once storage works again, use the personal storage guide to plan a separate backup copy. A second partition on the same SSD is not a replacement for that copy.

What to send technical support

Send the PC or motherboard model, SSD part number and capacity, slot name or enclosure model, and Windows version. Include the Disk Management screenshot, any Device Manager error, and whether the drive appears in firmware. State whether it is new, previously working or moved from another machine—and whether its files matter.

That gives support a clear starting point without a long list of speculative changes. The useful outcome is an identified setup, connection or hardware problem, with the existing data preserved wherever possible.
