KVM Keyboard or Mouse Not Working? Check the USB Path

Video works but your KVM keyboard or mouse does not? Check host cables, USB ports, wireless receivers and Mac permissions before replacing hardware.

How we evaluate

If your KVM shows a picture but the keyboard or mouse does not work, check the USB connection to the selected computer first. On a conventional HDMI or DisplayPort KVM, video cables do not replace the separate USB host cable. Then test the peripheral directly on the computer and compare the KVM's dedicated keyboard/mouse ports with its shared USB ports.

Do not buy another keyboard yet. A missing host connection, mismatched input group or unsupported receiver can look like a dead peripheral.

This guide uses manufacturer and operating-system support documentation. We have not tested your particular KVM, keyboard, receiver or dock combination. The sequence below helps identify which part needs attention; it does not promise compatibility between every device.

If input works and only the picture fails, use the KVM black-screen checklist. Changing display resolution is not the first move for an input-only failure.

1. Prove the keyboard or mouse works directly

Plug the affected device into the computer without the KVM, dock or extra hub. For a receiver-based wireless device, move its receiver too. Check battery charge and the device's selected connection mode.

Try another computer USB port. If possible, repeat on the second computer. Microsoft's input-device troubleshooting recommends these direct tests before more involved fixes.

Record the result separately for keyboard and mouse. “Both fail through the KVM” is useful only after you know both work directly.

A device that fails directly needs its own troubleshooting. A device that works directly has passed a baseline test, not a KVM compatibility test. Borrow a simple wired keyboard or mouse for the next steps if one is available; it removes battery, radio and pairing questions from the experiment.

2. Follow the USB cable to the correct computer

Trace this path physically:

keyboard or mouse → KVM shared side → selected USB host connection → computer

On a conventional switch, PC1's video and USB cables must belong to the same computer. Check the labels at both ends instead of relying on cable colour. StarTech's connection explanation confirms the separate USB requirement for this type of KVM.

An integrated USB-C or Thunderbolt KVM can combine signals in one cable. Use its upstream-port instructions rather than adding a cable it does not require. Our laptop KVM wiring guide covers that distinction.

Some switches select USB independently from video. Check the USB indicator or documented “follow” setting, then select the intended host with the physical button. TESmart's USB-path guide describes this behaviour on applicable models. A working picture alone does not tell you which computer owns the USB ports.

3. Compare dedicated input ports with shared USB ports

A socket marked with a keyboard or mouse icon can behave differently from a general USB hub socket. Dedicated ports may interpret input for emulation or switching hotkeys. That can limit support for unusual keyboards, combined receivers and extra functions.

If direct input works, move one affected device to a normal shared USB port when the KVM manual permits it. For example, StarTech's SV231DPDDUA2 manual recommends its hub ports when wireless or gaming input devices fail through the console ports.

If the device now works, keep the result specific: this port arrangement works with this device. It does not prove the dedicated port is broken.

There is a trade-off. On the TESmart models covered by its common-questions page, moving a keyboard to the general USB port removes keyboard hotkey switching. Use the switch button or controller instead. Check your exact manual before copying hotkey sequences or changing emulation modes.

4. Separate Bluetooth from a USB wireless receiver

A keyboard paired over Bluetooth directly to computer A stays connected to computer A when you press the KVM button. The KVM has no USB input from that keyboard to redirect.

For hardware switching, the peripheral needs a supported wired data connection or compatible USB receiver on the KVM's shared side. Select the receiver channel on a device with multiple modes. A charging cable is not proof that the device supports wired input.

Do not assume every receiver supports switching. Logitech's connection guidance calls for a direct computer connection for the devices it covers. Check the peripheral maker as well as the KVM maker.

If a supported receiver works but becomes erratic near USB 3 equipment, test its placement. Logitech documents possible interference with 2.4GHz peripherals. Move it closer to the mouse and away from active USB 3 drives or cables; use a short receiver extension only where supported. Improvement suggests a placement problem, not proof that the KVM adds measurable input lag.

5. Isolate a failure on just one computer

Keep a working peripheral fixed while changing one part of the host path. TESmart's recognition troubleshooting uses cable and port comparisons to narrow the fault.

Keep video and USB selection consistent during these tests. Label any cable you move so you can restore the layout.

Remove extra shared devices while testing, then reconnect them individually. Safely eject storage before disconnecting or switching it. If trouble returns only with another peripheral attached, investigate that device and the documented USB power requirements; do not substitute an arbitrary power adapter.

6. Check Mac approval and sleep separately

On an Apple-silicon Mac laptop, unlock it using the built-in controls and approve the connected accessory when prompted. Apple explains that accessory approval controls data access; power can still be present when access is denied. A charging light does not prove the USB connection is authorised.

Keep the lid open for this test. On a managed work laptop, ask IT about an enforced restriction rather than weakening accessory security settings.

For sleep-only failures, wake the computer locally and repeat the direct-connection test. Note whether input fails after waking, after switching away and back, or on every connection. Those are different reproduction steps for vendor support. Avoid changing several power settings at once: you would lose the comparison that identifies the cause.

When should you replace anything?

Keep the KVM if a permitted shared USB port solves the problem and physical-button switching is acceptable. There is little reason to replace the whole desk to recover a hotkey you rarely use.

Consider replacement when a known-working peripheral and host cable repeatedly fail through one KVM input, or the vendor confirms your required devices are unsupported. Send support the exact models, operating systems, cable layout and test results first.

The useful buying result is a named limitation: the failed cable, unsupported receiver, unsuitable port behaviour or broken input group. Get that answer before paying for a replacement.
