Desktop Speakers Humming or Buzzing? Diagnose Before Buying

Trace speaker hum, buzz and hiss with a simple source-and-cable check. Find out when to change a connection, contact support or keep your speakers.

How we evaluate

Start by checking whether the noise remains with the audio inputs disconnected at the speakers. Then reconnect one source through one known-working cable. Those two checks are more useful than ordering an interface, replacement speakers and a noise filter together.

The goal is to identify what changes the noise. A hum that appears only with your PC connected calls for a different next step from hiss that remains with no source attached.

This is a research-based troubleshooting guide using manufacturer support documentation, not a report of hands-on tests or measured noise performance. It is for powered desktop speakers with accessible audio inputs. Follow your model's manual where its connection procedure differs.

First, record what you hear

Pause playback and listen from your usual seat at your usual volume. Note whether one speaker or both are affected, and whether the noise changes with computer activity. Avoid turning everything up to hunt for a problem you cannot hear during normal use.

Use these descriptions as clues, not diagnoses. Mouse-related noise does not establish a faulty graphics card, and crackling is not necessarily a ground loop. Write down your starting settings so each comparison can be repeated.

1. Check the speakers without an audio source

Turn the speaker volume down and switch the speakers off before changing signal cables. Disconnect the source cables at the speaker inputs, including unused inputs connected to other devices. Keep the normal connection between the two speaker cabinets as the manual specifies; do not confuse that with a line input.

Switch the speakers on and gradually return to your ordinary setting. Listen from your seat. Yamaha's troubleshooting guidance uses a similar disconnected-input check to separate the speaker/amplifier stage from upstream equipment.

If the noise stops, write “quiet with inputs removed.” That makes the connected signal path the next place to investigate. It does not identify which component caused the problem.

If substantial noise remains, record the input mode and volume setting for the manufacturer. Stop here if a cable is damaged or equipment behaves abnormally. Do not open a powered speaker or alter its power wiring. Never remove or defeat a protective earth connection to silence hum. Yamaha explicitly warns against removing an AC plug's ground pin.

2. Reconnect one source, then compare another

Start with just the source you actually use. Leave the other audio devices disconnected for this comparison. Select the correct input and begin at low volume.

Next, try a different compatible source through the same input and cable if you have one. A laptop with an appropriate audio output is useful; an adapter becomes another component to record. Then try a known-working cable of the correct type while keeping the source and input unchanged.

Keep a simple log:

  • PC, original cable, same input: noise present or absent.
  • Other source, original cable, same input: noise present or absent.
  • PC, substitute cable, same input: noise present or absent.

If you change source, input and cable together, a quiet result tells you much less. Return to the noisy combination once to check that the difference repeats.

3. If the computer connection triggers it

Focusrite's monitor-noise guide identifies computer activity, connected equipment and power arrangements as possible contributors. Its useful checks include another computer, a suitable replacement USB cable for an interface, and a laptop running on battery.

For the battery comparison, disconnect the laptop's charger normally. Do not modify a mains cable. A change is a clue about the connected arrangement, not a diagnosis of a faulty charger or building wiring.

With a USB interface, record whether headphones connected to that interface also carry the noise. Simplify nonessential peripheral connections one at a time, following the devices' disconnection instructions. Retest the same short passage and pause it each time.

Move analog audio leads away from power bricks and mains cables where practical. Focusrite also recommends keeping cable runs reasonably short and using balanced connections when both source and speakers support them.

Do not buy an interface solely because someone else's setup became quiet with one. First identify a repeatable change in your own system.

4. Treat hiss separately from hum

A little hiss close to a powered speaker can be its own amplifier noise. Genelec explains that active speakers produce self-noise, which may be audible in a quiet room at close range. Its product-specific noise figures are not limits for an Edifier or another brand.

Genelec also describes reducing monitor sensitivity and raising the source level to reduce source-related hiss. Where your controls allow it, make a modest comparison: lower speaker gain, raise the source cautiously, and keep listening loudness comparable. Start low and stop if playback distorts. There is no universal volume percentage for every computer and speaker combination.

If hiss remains with inputs removed, changing a signal cable will not remove the speaker's own noise. Ask the manufacturer whether the observed level fits that exact model, especially if one side differs markedly.

What is worth buying—and what should you skip?

Replace a cable when the substitution check consistently points to it. Match the input, output and required length. A higher price is not evidence that another cable will solve an unidentified fault.

Consider a different connection when you have shown the current path is the problem. Existing compatible balanced inputs may be useful. Before spending, check the complete path with the equipment maker rather than assembling adapters by connector shape.

Skip replacement speakers when the same pair is quiet with another source. Work through the noisy source path first. Conversely, persistent intrusive noise with inputs disconnected is a reason to ask about service or return options before buying accessories.

Send support a result they can use

Include the exact speaker and source models, input labels, cable types, volume settings and normal listening distance. Describe whether the noise remains without input cables and which single substitution changed it. A short recording can illustrate the character, but a phone's recording level is not a calibrated noise measurement.

A useful support note is: “Both speakers buzz with this PC through AUX. They are quiet with the input removed and with another source using the same cable.” That gives support a starting point. “I bought three filters and it still buzzes” does not.

Keep the setup that works while resolving the faulty path. Buy the component your checks justify, or use the warranty process if the remaining problem belongs with the manufacturer.
