If the three are close in price at the same capacity, choose the MP44. Its 2TB model is rated up to 7,000MB/s read, 6,000MB/s write, and 1,000TBW. The MP44L 2TB drops to 4,800/4,400MB/s and 640TBW. The MP44Q 2TB nearly matches the MP44's peak sequential figures on paper, but TEAMGROUP explicitly identifies its flash as 3D QLC NAND.

That does not make the MP44Q unusable. It makes the buying rule stricter: it should cost less, and the workload should mostly read data rather than continually rewrite it.

These figures are capacity-specific. The 512GB MP44, for example, has lower official write and endurance ratings than the 2TB version. Always compare the exact capacity and part number you plan to buy.

The names decoded

The letter after MP44 changes the product.

  • MP44 uses part numbers beginning TM8FPW. It is the higher specified all-round family here and currently spans 512GB to 8TB.
  • MP44L uses TM8FPK. It is a lower performance tier and currently tops out at 2TB.
  • MP44Q uses TM8FFD. TEAMGROUP explicitly describes it as a 3D QLC product, and its current live table runs from 1TB to 8TB.
  • MP44S is another product again: a shorter M.2 2230 drive aimed at compact devices. It is not one of the three M.2 2280 drives compared here.

Marketplace titles can be truncated, and a search result may group capacities or adjacent models. Check the full part number on the listing and delivered label. A missing L or Q is enough to change what you are buying.

Buy the MP44 if: this will be a main PC drive, you regularly install or move large games, or you need 4TB or 8TB from this family.

At 2TB, the MP44 has the strongest balanced paper specification: 7,000/6,000MB/s sequential read/write and 1,000TBW. It also scales to larger capacities without making buyers move to the QLC-labelled line.

The limitations still matter. TEAMGROUP lists no dedicated DRAM, and its current specification sheet does not promise a NAND type or controller. Reviewed units can show what was inside those samples; they cannot guarantee the components in every future retail unit. We would buy the MP44 for its current product-level ratings and capacity range, not on an unsupported assumption that every drive must use TLC.

Best budget: TEAMGROUP MP44L

Buy the MP44L if: you need an inexpensive 2TB drive for games, applications, downloads, and everyday files—and it is meaningfully cheaper than the MP44.

The MP44L is not simply an MP44 with a shorter warranty. It is rated for lower peak speed and lower write endurance at 2TB. Its 2.25mm published thickness may help in a tight laptop slot, but physical dimensions alone do not guarantee compatibility.

For ordinary desktop use and a game library, the lower headline speed may matter less than the price gap. It matters more during repeated large transfers, content-creation scratch work, virtual-machine storage, or any job that keeps writing after a drive's fast cache has been exhausted.

Best for discounted bulk storage: TEAMGROUP MP44Q

Buy the MP44Q if: you need roomy, mostly read-heavy storage and the exact capacity is clearly cheaper than the MP44.

The Q is the one component clue TEAMGROUP makes explicit: MP44Q uses 3D QLC NAND. Its 2TB peak sequential ratings and 1,000TBW figure look close to the MP44, so it is easy to conclude that the two drives are practically identical. They are not.

Peak sequential numbers describe a best-case manufacturer test, not every stage of a long transfer. Flash type, controller behaviour, dynamic cache size, free capacity, firmware, temperature, and workload all affect what happens once the easy part of a benchmark is over. We have not measured a current 2TB retail MP44Q, so we will not invent a post-cache transfer rate.

QLC is not a synonym for failure. It is a reason to match the drive to the job and the price. A large library that is written occasionally and read often is a more natural fit than a daily scratch disk that repeatedly ingests and discards large projects.

Why peak speed does not settle this comparison

The MP44 and MP44Q look nearly tied in TEAMGROUP's 2TB sequential table. That table does not tell you how either drive behaves when nearly full, during sustained writes, under poor cooling, or after its fast cache is consumed.

The MP44L's lower rating is clearer, but even that does not mean Windows, a browser, or every game loads 45% slower. Normal desktop work mixes small reads, queue depths, idle time, decompression, CPU work, and network delays. A storage benchmark isolates only part of the experience.

Use the official figures as tier markers:

  • MP44 is the higher specified all-round choice.
  • MP44L is the budget 2TB choice.
  • MP44Q is the capacity-and-discount choice with explicit QLC.

For sustained professional work, buy from evidence that measures your actual workload and the exact capacity. Do not extrapolate one reviewed sample to every capacity or later production batch.

Which one should you buy?

For a main Windows or Linux PC

Choose the MP44 when the price is reasonable. A main drive handles operating-system updates, application installs, temporary files, downloads, and mixed reads and writes. The MP44's stronger published tier gives it more headroom without pretending it is a premium DRAM-equipped workstation drive.

For a game library

Choose the MP44L if it is substantially cheaper and 2TB is enough. Choose the MP44Q if you need more capacity or it is the discounted option. Choose the MP44 when the gap is small, especially if large game updates and file moves are frequent.

For video editing, VMs, or a scratch disk

None is an automatic recommendation from specifications alone. These are all DRAM-less products, and component disclosure is limited outside the MP44Q's QLC label. Prefer a well-tested, better-characterised SSD for work that repeatedly writes large datasets or where predictable sustained behaviour directly affects income.

For a laptop

All three are M.2 2280 drives, but check the laptop service manual, supported capacity, single- or double-sided clearance, thermal pad, and available screw position. The MP44L has the thinnest published profile, yet that does not override firmware or capacity limits in the host.

For PS5

Do not buy any bare drive from the PCIe 4.0 label alone. Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read alongside specific physical and cooling requirements. The MP44L's 4,800MB/s manufacturer rating falls below that recommendation. If console use is the priority, a model sold with a clearly compliant heatsink is the cleaner purchase.

Price rules that keep the decision honest

SSD prices move too often for a fixed dollar threshold to age well. Compare the same capacity, seller quality, warranty path, and heatsink configuration on the day you buy.

  • MP44 vs MP44L: buy the MP44L only for a useful saving. If the gap feels trivial, the MP44's higher speed and endurance tier is worth more.
  • MP44 vs MP44Q: buy the MP44Q only for a clear same-capacity discount or a better in-stock seller option. Both current live product tables reach 8TB, so capacity alone does not separate them.
  • Any MP44 model vs a premium drive: if a well-documented DRAM-equipped alternative is close in price, compare sustained-workload evidence and warranty support before staying inside this family.

Avoid comparing a discounted 4TB MP44Q with a full-price 2TB MP44 and calling one universally better value. Capacity changes the job as well as the price.

Alternatives

A WD_BLACK SN850X-class drive is worth considering when gaming performance, a factory-heatsink option, or a more established premium tier matters. A Samsung 990 PRO-class drive makes more sense for buyers willing to pay for a DRAM-equipped flagship Gen4 design. Neither is automatically good value; check the exact capacity and live gap.

Buy the TEAMGROUP MP44 if you want the most broadly useful drive in this family. It is the strongest choice for a main PC, mixed use, or capacities above 2TB when the price gap is sensible.

Buy the MP44L only when 2TB is enough, the workload is ordinary, and the saving over the MP44 is meaningful. Buy the MP44Q for a read-heavy library or bulk storage when its QLC trade-off is reflected in the price.
