Rated speeds are "up to" figures. The manufacturers used different CPUs, motherboards, operating systems, and test tools in their published conditions. The sensible conclusion is that both sit in the top Gen5 performance class—not that a small number in this table predicts the winner in your workload.
The Optimus GX PRO 8100 is the WD_BLACK SN8100 under a new name
SanDisk began moving the WD_BLACK SSD portfolio to the Optimus name on 5 January 2026. The company says the WD_BLACK SN8100 is now branded SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 8100, with updated packaging and branding but unchanged performance.
That creates a practical buying trap. Retail pages, reviews, firmware discussions, and remaining stock may use either name. An SN8100 result is not automatically an obsolete or different controller, but you still need to confirm the capacity, heatsink configuration, model number, seller, and warranty region.
For the 4TB non-heatsink SanDisk model in this guide, look for model SDSP82400TAN. Do not assume every listing containing "8100" is the same product; SanDisk also sells other Optimus tiers with similar numbering.
Which SSD is faster?
On the specification sheets, the answer changes with the test:
- SanDisk lists a 100MB/s sequential-read advantage and a 600MB/s sequential-write advantage at 4TB.
- SanDisk lists up to 2.3 million random-read IOPS, compared with Samsung's 2.2 million.
- Samsung lists up to 2.6 million random-write IOPS, compared with SanDisk's 2.4 million.
These gaps are too small and too test-dependent to settle the buying decision. Peak sequential speed describes ideal large transfers, while random IOPS figures depend heavily on queue depth, thread count, test span, drive state, firmware, and platform.
Game loading, app launches, Windows updates, code builds, scratch work, and long writes stress storage differently. We would not buy one drive over the other for a few percentage points of vendor-rated speed.
The useful question is whether you can feed a Gen5 SSD at all. A PCIe 4.0 slot caps both drives below their headline bandwidth. Sharing chipset lanes, filling the drive, exhausting its dynamic cache, or letting the controller overheat can also matter more than the difference between 14,800 and 14,900MB/s.
