Stream Deck Buttons Not Working? Check the App Before USB

Stream Deck keys light up but do nothing? Separate missing plugins, wrong profiles and hotkey focus problems before resetting your layout or buying hardware.

Editorial evidence review

Recommendations are checked against product documentation, availability, comparative evidence, and clearly disclosed hands-on work where it exists.

How we evaluate

If your Stream Deck lights up but its buttons do nothing, test a built-in System action before reinstalling plugins or buying another cable. A working test key points you toward the failed action, its target app or its profile. A failed test means you need to check the wider app and device connection first.

This guide is for physical Elgato Stream Deck owners on Windows or macOS. It is based on Elgato documentation and diagnostic reasoning, not hands-on testing. It covers unresponsive actions; a damaged key, a completely unpowered deck or a Stream Deck Mobile pairing problem needs a different investigation.

Match the symptom first

Do not treat a lit display as proof that the desktop app and every plugin are working. It tells you much less than a button that successfully performs a known action.

1. Save your layout before changing it

Create a backup before updates, reinstalls or major profile changes. In Stream Deck settings, open Profiles, then use the arrow menu to choose Backup All → Create Backup. Save it somewhere you can find again.

Elgato's backup instructions warn that restoring a backup overwrites existing profiles. Keep a fresh backup of today's layout before trying an older one. Avoid deleting your settings folders as a first troubleshooting step.

2. Make one simple test key

Open the Stream Deck desktop app and select the physical device you are using. Check that the layout shown in the app matches the keys in front of you.

  1. Find an empty key, or create a temporary profile if the layout is full.
  2. Drag System → Open onto it.
  3. Select a local folder that you can already open normally in your file manager.
  4. Press the physical key and watch for that folder to open.

The System Open action does not require an app-specific Marketplace plugin. Using a local folder also avoids confusing an internet or website failure with a dead key.

If it works: keep the test key while you investigate the original action. This does not prove every key or connection is fault-free, but it shows that this key can trigger a basic desktop action.

If it fails: try the same action on another spare key. If neither works, quit and reopen the Stream Deck app. In versions with an Enabled setting, check Preferences → Devices → Enabled. Elgato added the ability to disable a device in the app so another controller application can use it. Close that other controller before returning control to Stream Deck.

If the device is missing or still unresponsive, test it directly on the computer rather than through a dock or USB switch. Change one connection at a time and repeat the same folder-opening test. An improvement only on the direct connection is a useful clue about the intermediate connection, not proof that you need a more expensive deck.

3. Fix a missing or incompatible plugin

A downloaded profile is a layout, not a complete installation of every integration it uses. Elgato documents question-mark keys when the required plugins are absent. Select the affected key and use its missing-plugin prompt where available, or locate the plugin in Marketplace.

Before installing, check the publisher, supported operating system and minimum Stream Deck version. If you use dials, check dial support separately: a plugin with working button actions does not necessarily provide a dial action. Elgato lists these checks in its plugin installation guide.

Once installed, put one action from that plugin on a spare key and configure it from scratch. Compare it with the imported action. If the new key works, inspect the old key's selected account, device or target before replacing the whole profile.

If both plugin keys fail while the System test works, follow the plugin publisher's setup instructions. Open its target app and complete any account connection it requests. A plugin can be installed successfully and still need configuration before it controls anything.

4. Check hotkeys and profiles separately

A Hotkey action sends a keyboard shortcut; it does not guarantee that the intended application receives it. Elgato's hotkey guidance notes that most shortcuts go to the active window.

For a harmless command, compare these two tests:

  • Click inside the intended application and try its shortcut on your keyboard.
  • Keep that application active and press the matching Stream Deck key.

If neither works, check the application's shortcut assignment first. If only the keyboard works, recheck the Stream Deck action and the application's support or permission requirements. Do not use a recording, broadcast or destructive shortcut as your first experiment.

Smart Profiles can also change the layout when a different app becomes active. Watch the physical keys as you move between the editor and your target app. A matching icon is not enough: confirm the active profile contains the action you configured. For diagnosis, use a simple test profile without an application association, then restore your normal profile arrangement afterward.

5. Treat “Waiting for OBS” as an integration problem

If other keys work but OBS controls do not, check OBS rather than repeatedly reconnecting USB.

Elgato's OBS troubleshooting page describes two parts: the plugin inside Stream Deck and the integration loaded by OBS itself. It specifies Stream Deck 6.5.2 or newer for OBS 30.1 or later; that is a compatibility floor, not a recommendation to install an old release.

Back up your profiles, close OBS, install a current Stream Deck version compatible with your operating system, and reopen OBS. For portable OBS installations, follow the portable-mode instructions linked from that support page: the ordinary installation path may not apply.

Verify with a harmless action in a test scene. Do not assume an icon changing means that your live scene or microphone actually changed; check the result in OBS.

When to stop troubleshooting and what to buy

Keep the current deck if the System action works and the remaining problem is a plugin, profile or shortcut. More keys will not fix the wrong target application. A plain keyboard shortcut is a useful temporary alternative when an integration stops working.

Contact support if a basic action still fails after restarting the app and testing a direct connection. Record the model, operating system, Stream Deck version, plugin version, exact error and whether the same test works on another key. Include what changed immediately before the failure. Those details are more useful than “all my buttons are broken.”

Consider different hardware only when the layout is the limitation. If working actions require too much folder navigation, our Stream Deck buying guide explains key-count and dial trade-offs. Check the required plugins on your own operating system before paying for controls you cannot use.

For a desk shared between computers, also distinguish a USB switch from a KVM switch. Switching the physical USB connection does not set up the Stream Deck app, profiles and plugins on the second computer for you.
