PS5 SSD Heatsink Requirements: Check Fit Before Buying
Buying a PS5 SSD? Check heatsink height, width, exact model and capacity before paying. Learn when a factory cooler is worth it and when 2TB is enough.

Buy the SSD and its cooling arrangement as one checked combination. For a straightforward PS5 upgrade, our preference is a factory-heatsink version with explicit compatibility documentation for the exact capacity. A bare drive plus a separate cooler can make sense, but compare the complete cost and confirm the assembled dimensions before ordering.
This is a research-based buying checklist, not a heatsink temperature test. We checked Sony's requirements and manufacturer guidance on 25 September 2026. We have not tested these cooling combinations, and we do not rank heatsinks by appearance or promise faster game loading from a larger cooler.
Who this is for—and who should skip the upgrade
Use this checklist if two retailer listings look identical except for a heatsink option, or if you want to reuse an SSD already in your drawer. It also helps when choosing between a smaller drive with documented fit and a larger drive with unclear specifications.
Skip the purchase for now if your active games already fit comfortably. Storage capacity is worth paying for when it removes a recurring inconvenience. It is poor value if you buy it because a listing suggests every PS5 owner needs an upgrade.

Those upper and lower clearances matter separately. A total-height number alone does not establish fit. Sony accepts single-sided and double-sided drives, but advises checking uncertain combinations with the manufacturer. Follow its installation instructions for your console model, and update the console software before fitting the drive.
Check the exact variant before comparing prices
Build your shortlist around a model code, capacity and cooling option. A family name is not enough for an order you expect to fit first time.
For each candidate, save these three pieces of evidence:
- The retailer's selected capacity and model code, including whether the heatsink is included.
- The manufacturer's specification for that version, rather than a photograph of another capacity.
- The completed assembly's dimensions or an explicit manufacturer compatibility statement covering the combination.
If a retailer mixes bare-drive and heatsink photographs, use the selected model code to resolve the mismatch. Do not let the most reassuring image make the decision for you. A customer question answered under a shared listing may refer to a different variant as well.
Our buying rule: a slightly cheaper listing with an unresolved model code belongs outside the shortlist until the seller clarifies it. That is a purchase-risk judgement, not a claim that the underlying drive is inferior.

Factory heatsink or separate cooler?
Choose a factory heatsink for a simpler purchase
We would pay a modest premium to avoid separately matching a drive, cooler and pad arrangement, especially for a first upgrade. Compare two documented-compatible choices before deciding what that convenience is worth to you.
A useful comparison is the delivered price of the heatsink edition against the bare drive, cooler and any required accessories together. Include shipping from a second seller. A saving that disappears at checkout is not a reason to take on extra assembly work.
Do not add a second cooler to a factory-heatsink SSD. Sony advises against stacking additional heatsinks because this can reduce the original cooler's effectiveness. Source: PlayStation's heatsink FAQ.
Choose a separate cooler when the combination is documented
This is most compelling when you already own a suitable bare drive, or the complete combination leaves a worthwhile saving. Ask the cooler maker to confirm the SSD model and capacity rather than requesting a general “PS5 compatible” answer.
Our suggested support question is: “Will this cooler fit SSD model X at capacity Y, using the supplied pads, inside my PS5 model Z? Which pad arrangement should I use?” Keep the response with the order details.
Avoid building a purchase around improvisation. If the instructions do not establish the combination, another cooler or a factory-heatsink version is a better starting point than buying extra pads and hoping to make it fit.
Do not pay for a PC speed headline
Kingston explains that the console operates at PCIe 4.0 speeds, so a Gen5 drive cannot deliver its Gen5 interface speed in a PS5. That removes one reason to pay more for a newer interface. Source: Kingston's PS5 SSD installation guide.
Our priority order is compatibility, useful capacity, total price and support. Only then would we compare relevant performance evidence. A large number on a desktop benchmark chart does not answer whether you will enjoy keeping more games installed.
We would also skip a premium cooler whose main selling point is a temperature claim with no documented test conditions. This guide cannot tell you which cooler runs coldest. It can help you avoid paying for a claim that has not been connected to your console or workload.
Is 2TB enough, or should you buy 4TB?
Start with your own game library. Write down the titles you want ready to play, using their installed sizes from the console rather than a generic games-per-terabyte estimate. Include the games shared with other people using the console, then allow room for new purchases and updates.
A smaller drive is the sensible alternative when that list fits without constant pruning. A larger one earns its premium when several people rotate through large libraries or repeatedly reinstall the same games. Neither situation makes 4TB automatically better value.

Could USB storage solve the cheaper problem?
If the main frustration is keeping older games somewhere convenient, check whether an existing compatible USB drive is enough. PS4 games can run from USB extended storage. PS5 games can be stored there, but must be copied back to playable console storage before use. Source: PlayStation USB extended storage guidance.
That makes USB storage a different compromise: less convenient for switching between PS5 games, potentially useful for a library you revisit occasionally. Count the inconvenience of copying games against the cost of a new internal drive. If you want every frequently played PS5 title immediately accessible, choose an appropriately sized compatible M.2 drive instead.
Before paying: confirm the selected model code, capacity, included cooler, compatibility evidence and return process. Buy enough room for the games you actually keep installed, with a cooling arrangement you can verify. The best saving is avoiding a second order to correct the first one.
