Arctis Nova 7 ChatMix Not Working? Check These Sonar Settings

Fix Nova 7 and Gen 2 game/chat balance on Windows: check Sonar routing, Discord output and the headset dial before resetting or replacing your headset.

Editorial evidence review

Recommendations are checked against product documentation, availability, comparative evidence, and clearly disclosed hands-on work where it exists.

How we evaluate

If your Arctis Nova 7 or Nova 7 Gen 2 plays sound but the ChatMix dial does nothing, check two things in Sonar: Game and Chat must play through the headset, and your game and voice call must reach separate channels. A working volume wheel does not prove that game/chat routing is correct.

Start with routing, not a replacement headset. You can hear both a game and Discord even when Windows is sending everything directly to the headset or putting both applications on one Sonar channel.

This is a Windows setup guide based on SteelSeries support documentation, not hands-on testing. It covers the standard Nova 7 and Nova 7 Gen 2 through their wireless dongle; the 7X has its own linked guidance below. It does not promise that software settings will repair damaged hardware.

Check that this is the right problem

The Nova 7P's second wheel controls sidetone, which is your own microphone fed back to your ears. SteelSeries lists this distinction in its Nova 7, 7P and 7X comparison. If hearing yourself is the complaint, use our sidetone and mic-monitoring guide.

1. Separate the virtual channels from the physical headset

There are two choices to make, in different places. Windows and your applications send sound into a Sonar channel. Sonar sends that channel out to the physical headset.

Where you are choosing a deviceIntended choice for this setup
Windows default playbackSteelSeries Sonar Gaming
Windows default communications playbackSteelSeries Sonar Chat
Voice-chat application's outputSteelSeries Sonar Chat
Sonar Game playback deviceYour connected Nova 7 headset
Sonar Chat playback deviceThe same connected Nova 7 headset

Device labels can include extra punctuation or a longer model name. The distinction matters more than matching every character: Sonar Gaming and Sonar Chat are software destinations; the Nova headset is the hardware destination.

SteelSeries' Sonar setup instructions describe the Windows defaults and the separate playback/input choices inside Sonar. In Windows, the default communications choice is in the Playback tab of More sound settings. Sonar may also offer a banner to set its defaults automatically.

Before changing anything, note your existing defaults or take a screenshot. If you use speakers for work and a headset only for games, you will want to restore that preference later. Do this between calls, since changing an output can interrupt what you hear.

2. Put game audio and voice chat on different channels

Open SteelSeries GG, enable Sonar and open its Mixer. Play some game audio, then start a voice call or another suitable chat-audio check. Confirm which channel receives each sound.

Your target is simple: the game reaches Game, and the voices you want to balance reach Chat. If both arrive on Game, the dial has no separate chat stream to balance against it.

Sonar lets you move active applications between channels. Its app-routing documentation also explains a limitation: some applications require changing their own output setting, and some need restarting before a routing change takes effect.

Discord needs an output check of its own

In Discord's voice settings, explicitly choose SteelSeries Sonar Chat as the output for the test. Selecting an output does not select your microphone; keep the input set to the microphone you actually use.

SteelSeries documents separate Discord audio sessions for activities and voice channels. Seeing a Discord icon under Game therefore does not, by itself, prove that the voice call is routed incorrectly. Listen to an actual voice channel and check its path, rather than repeatedly dragging an icon that represents another session.

If a game handles voice chat internally, inspect its settings for a separate voice output. When the application provides only one combined output stream, the mixer cannot independently balance voices already mixed into that stream. Use the game's own voice-volume setting in that situation.

3. Check whether Sonar has handed control to the dial

For the Nova 7 family, SteelSeries says the onscreen ChatMix slider should become unavailable when Sonar recognises the headset's physical control. A greyed-out slider can therefore be the expected state, rather than a broken feature.

If the slider remains active and the headset wheel has no effect, follow the manufacturer's Nova 7 and Nova 7 Gen 2 ChatMix troubleshooting:

  1. Reselect the headset as playback device for both Game and Chat.
  2. Exit GG from the Windows system tray, then reopen it.
  3. If necessary, reconnect the wireless dongle with Sonar open.
  4. Recheck the two playback destinations and application assignments.

Do not select monitor speakers for one channel and the headset for the other while testing the physical wheel. The model-specific instructions require the headset as the playback destination in both.

Verify the result with sound, not just a moving control

Keep playback at a comfortable level and put the balance near its middle. With game sound and a voice call audible, turn the dial a little toward each side and listen for the relative balance to change. Return it to the middle afterward.

If the control appears to respond but both sources rise and fall together, recheck whether they share one channel. If one source disappears completely, return the balance to the middle before diagnosing a missing output. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which step helped.

Nova 7X, PlayStation and phone audio are different cases

SteelSeries provides a separate Nova 7X and 7X Gen 2 PC/Xbox explanation. On Windows, the 7X uses Sonar setup. On Xbox, its dongle must be in Xbox mode and the supported game/chat control works through that connection. Do not assume that the standard Nova 7 gains Xbox support from installing GG.

For PlayStation, start with the console's supported voice-chat controls and your exact headset's documentation. A PC ChatMix feature on the box does not establish the same control path on a console. Our Xbox and PlayStation headset compatibility guide explains why the variant matters before purchase.

A phone connected over Bluetooth is also outside the Windows application-routing test above. If your actual goal is to hear a phone and a game together, read the multipoint versus simultaneous-audio guide. Two connected devices and two Sonar channels describe different setups.

When to keep the headset—and when to reconsider it

Keep it if routing fixes the problem. Buying another headset will not fix a chat application that is still set to the wrong output. If you rarely adjust game/chat balance, separate volume controls inside your game and call app may be sufficient without using the wheel at all.

Skip this troubleshooting route if you want a different feature. A sidetone adjustment will not rebalance teammates against game sound; simultaneous phone audio is not a Sonar routing problem. Establish which control you want before spending more.

If the headset still has no working dial after the model-specific checks, collect the exact model, GG version, Windows version, connection type and screenshots of the mixer for SteelSeries support. Say whether sound works, whether the onscreen slider is active, and whether software balance changes what you hear. Those observations are more useful than simply reporting “ChatMix broken.”

For a future purchase, compare platform support and software requirements before driver sizes or battery claims. Our Nova 7 Gen 2 versus Nova 5 comparison discusses when a physical balance dial is worth paying for. If you are happy setting voice volume once inside an application, that extra control may not justify an upgrade.
